A.EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Kamara-Taylor Foundation was established as a 501(c)(3) organization in 2016 by Mr Winston Kamara Taylor to alleviate poverty in Free Town, Sierra Leone by promoting the education and empowerment of single women, children, boys and girls in the rural areas of Sierra Leone. Basically the Foundation addresses the educational, social, recreational and logistical needs of children and youths in the rural areas of Sierra Leone. Our mission is to help children, single women, young boys and girls improve and maintain a healthy and independent lifestyle through education and to maximize their quality of life.
We are conscious of the changing demographics in our Foundation’s service area and are committed to growing and adapting our foundation to meet the emerging needs. This pilot project will provide comprehensive access to educational services and vocational training to the single mothers, children, boys and girls in the rural communities in Sierra Leone.
Our program objectives include ensuring that a minimum of 2.000 children, access basic education, and about 1000 single mothers access vocational training and other services of our foundation for the first time, and engaging a minimum of 80 teachers to be trained and sent to these schools within the grant period.
After the pilot phase has been completed, we are committed to phasing in access to our foundation’s other programs.
Nearly 80% of our children have no access to school and this high rate of illiteracy among children was caused by the close to 15 years civil wars that rocked the country Sierra Leone between 1991 to 2003.
The Kamara-Taylor Foundation therefore seeks to provide solutions by giving hope to the underprivileged by responding to their needs.
The total cost of implementation of this project is $1000.000. Of this amount, $119,600 has already been committed from other funders. Your investment of $880,400 will complete the funding we need to fully implement this pilot project, and we are excited about the prospects of partnering with you.
Thank you for your consideration of our request.
B.THE NEED.
The Kamara-Taylor Foundation estimates that about 80% of children and youths in the rural areas of Sierra Leone have no access to basic education.
The lack of teaching staff and the absence of basic infrastructure has increased the illiteracy rate to about 80% among youths as a result of the civil war that stroke the country between 1991 to 2003.
Again, about 75% of single mothers are unemployed with no income generating activities because they have never had access to meaningful vocational training.
The groups targeted for this project are among the most underserved in rural Sierra Leone: the children, youths and single mothers.
If the project were not undertaken, many more youths will find it difficult to access education and the level of illiteracy will be on a rise. Also, many single women who are actually of low-income will find it difficult to take care of their children due to lack of skills.
C. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES.
Goal: To decrease the degree of illiteracy among children and provide vocational training to single mothers in the rural areas of Sierra Leone.
OBJECTIVES:
-By the end of year one, provide 80 teachers in the rural areas of Sierra Leone with a 2 hour training program
-provide 70 single mothers in the rural areas of Sierra Leone with a 2 hours vocational training program that will increase income generating activities.
D. METHODS, STRATEGIES/ FORMAT.
To achieve the objectives of our project, the Kamara-Taylor Foundation will employ the methods outlined below. We have confidence in these methods, as they have been tested and proven successfully by two of our fellow nonprofit organizations whose client population are children and single mothers: The Sierra Leone Business NPAA and Capitol Food Sierra Leone.
Representatives of both organizations served as advisers to us as we developed this pilot project.
Objective 1:
-ensure that a minimum of 80 teachers in the rural areas of Sierra Leone are trained by the end of year.
Methods:
-The foundation will hire a program assistant and a full time teacher trainer to coordinate the recruitment program for the training of teachers.
-The program assistant will formerly track and chart the progress of each participant
Objective 2:
-ensure that about 70 single mothers in the rural areas receive a 2 hours vocational training to empower them on income generating activities.
-will track participants’ progress on a weekly basis for one year following completion of the classes.
Methods:
-the Foundation will hire a program assistant that will coordinate vocational activities
-the program assistant will formerly track and chart the progress of each single mother participating in the training
-will track participant’s progress on a weekly basis for six months following completion of the classes.
E. EVALUATION. ( How to assess the program’s accomplishment).
Program facilitators will administer both a pretest and a post test to teachers participants in order to measure what information is learned by the trainee teachers and single mothers during the one year program.
At the conclusion of each session, we also ask participating teachers and single mothers to complete a detailed evaluation questionnaire so we can continue to find ways to improve an already excellent program.
The program will also be evaluated regularly by an outside panel of professional evaluators.
F. SUSTAINABILITY.
Other sources of funding for this project will include funds from the Diamond Mining Corporation, the fishing industry and sports organizations in Sierra Leone.
G. THE BUDGET.
The Kamara-Taylor Foundation seeks to raise US$ 1m for the 3 years start up phase from a variety of sources including, but not limited to the US government sources, private individuals, foundations and private sector.
